Die Insel

Teneriffa erstreckt sich auf über 2000 Quadratkilometer und zählt etwa 1 Million Einwohner. Santa Cruz ist die Hauptstadt und verfügt über einen beliebten Überseehafen, der häufig von Kreuzfahrtschiffen angesteuert wird. Die Stadt ist mit zahlreichen Museen sowie einem Musik- und Kulturzentrum auch das kulturelle Zentrum der Insel. Die höchste Erhebung und gleichzeitig der höchste Berg Spaniens ist der Vulkan Pico del Teide. Der Nationalpark rund um den Berg wurde vor einigen Jahren von der UNESCO zum Weltnaturerbe ernannt.

Aktivurlaub

Die schwarzen Sandstrände rund um die Insel laden zum Baden und Entspannen, aber auch zu sportlichen Aktivitäten aller Art ein. Tauchen ist auf Teneriffa gut möglich, die Unterwasserwelt ist farbenprächtig und abwechslungsreich. Auch Golfplätze stehen zur Verfügung. Wen es in die Berge zieht, der kann in den wunderbaren Landschaften, speziell rund um den Pico del Teide, wandern oder mountainbiken. Ein Tipp für Familien ist der große Wasserpark mit dazugehörigem Delfinarium im Süden der Insel.

Sehenswürdigkeiten

Im Herzen Teneriffas liegt der Guajara, die zweithöchste Erhebung der Insel. Vom Gipfel aus bietet sich ein großartiger Ausblick auf den Teide und die Nachbarinseln Gran Canaria, El Hierro und La Palma. Nicht zu versäumen sind die imposanten Felsenklippen Los Gigantes, die über 500 Meter ins Meer abfallen. Am besten man bucht einen Bootsausflug und genießt das Naturschauspiel vom Meer aus, mit etwas Glück kann man auch Delfine beobachten. Wer das ursprüngliche Teneriffa sucht, der wird etwa im Bergdorf Masca oder in La Orotava, das zu den schönsten Orten der Kanaren zählt, fündig.

Teneriffa ist immer eine Reise wert! Ob Baden oder Sport, Kultur oder Unterhaltung – es ist für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei. Am besten wird die Insel mit dem Mietwagen erkundet, nur so kann man auch abseits der Touristenpfade wandeln.

Also, the listening public has fragmented so much that it’s hard to imagine an artist like Janis breaking through today.  Janis was many things: a blues singer like Bessie Smith, an R&B singer like Otis Redding, a stunningly original interpreter like Billie Holiday, a rock star, bandleader and songwriter.  It takes not only a supremely talented and driven artist, but a welcoming public too, to make a superstar out of such a confluence of qualities.  Because of her lifestyle, her early death, the searching nature of the era’s young music fans, and of course the intensity of her performances, Janis became greater than the sum of her musical parts: she became a cultural icon.

It’s hard to imagine a Janis-style performer (not that there could really ever be such a thing) becoming a cultural icon today, with “culture” split into so many pieces and musical taste along with it.  Web sites that feature new music are constantly trying to figure out what genres, sub-genres and even sub-sub-genres to define and include.  No one can keep up with it.  The last white pop musician to become such an icon in the US was Kurt Cobain, who lived and died before the Internet explosion made every struggling artist his own publicist.  Janis, with her unpretty voice and face, could probably attain no more than niche popularity if she appeared on the scene today.

ARTISTS AND POPPETS

All of which makes the continued public fascination with Janis even more interesting today, three decades down the road.  Myself, I was just a child in 1970, and one who’d had no exposure to rock music.  But here you are, reading my words about her.  And it continues in today’s children: since putting up this website, I’ve had many requests for information from kids who are doing reports on Janis for school, or are budding singers, or simply want to know more and so they contact anyone they think might be an authority.

I love the fact that these kids are interested in Janis.  But at the same time I wish I could do more to turn them on to the living artists who are making great and passionate music right now, but don’t get a fair hearing.  Everything these courageous (or foolhardy) artists do, from recording and manufacturing CDs to gassing up their vans, comes out of their own pockets.  Thus they are not splashed all over MTV, commercial radio, record store windows and big-name corporate websites like the latest major-label poppet, and that’s a damn shame.

DEDICATED, BRILLIANT & BROKE

Sometimes I tell the kids about Indiegrrl, a volunteer network of independent female musical artists that is doing a good job of helping indies raise their profiles.  Since I’m the husband and co-manager of one of these artists I’ve had the privilege of meeting and hearing many wonderful female artists and female-led bands who are more talented and deserving than pretty much anything in rotation on commercial radio.

Below are notes on a few female artists who I really believe deserve much greater recognition than they have so far attained.

STEFANIE FIX

Stefanie Fix describes herself as a folk singer, but that doesn’t quite do her justice.  First off, her voice is a far more powerful instrument than those of most acoustic artists, and it’s the first thing one notices when one hears her.  Second, many of her lyrics (though not all) are confessional, and I traditionally associate folk music with songs that focus more on storytelling than on the songwriter’s own life and loves.  And personally, I usually don’t go in for the confessional singer-songwriter thing anyway.  But listening to Fix’s songs, voice and consummate guitar work, I realize that my issue with confessional singer-songwriters is that their lyrics are usually sappy, self-indulgent, obvious and cliched.  Hers are not.

But what genre you put her in isn’t important.  Stefanie Fix is a truly mesmerizing singer-songwriter.

KAREN RUSH

Karen Rush writes catchy (dare I say unforgettable?) rock songs, and sings them in a rich mezzo that’s unlike any other voice you’ve heard.  Her brilliantly-produced EP has a strong pop flavor, while her live band rocks much harder.  The music works both ways.  Rush sings with peculiar inflections, and off-key.  But somehow it all adds to her power.

ELISA PEIMER

Elisa Peimer is a good singer, a fine musician and an extraordinary songwriter.  Equally masterful at feel-good rockers and cozy ballads, Peimer is starting to impress the industry as well she should.  She has certainly impressed me.

The e-cigarette is a wonderful compromise, delivering the nicotine smokers crave without the nuisance of second-hand smoke. It also is healthier for smokers, removing tobacco, tar, and other carcinogenic products added to cigarettes.
